The Source Engine or Source is one of the most common engines used in machinima. It is pirmarily a PC engine, has a built in video recorder and offers great possibility for customization.

Games Edit

The Source engine was created by Valve and supports their primary titles. Also, it supports other games from third-party developers, most notably Arcane Studios and ACE Team. While the machinima itself is mostly created in Garry's Mod, it utilizes the models and maps from the following Source games and modifications:

  • Half-Life 2
  • Counter-Strike: Source
  • Day Of Defeat: Source
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Portal
  • Left 4 Dea
  • Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic
  • Zeno Clash
  • The Ship

Advantages for machinima Edit

The Source Engine is the most popular PC engine to use for machinima. It offers a lot of tools at disposal free, it is greatly customized, has a huge modding community. Also, The Source Engine's main machinima game, The Garry's Mod, makes creating movies easy, allowing the players to spawn NPC's, ragdolls and different objects from any Source Game (if they have the content) and place them anywhere with the Physics gun.

Most common genres Edit

While the engine is good for comedy sketches and stop motion films, it iss significantly more difficult to use it for action machinimas. In that regard, most machinima makers prefer Halo 3 to Source when it comes to filming action because of its theatre mode. That's why the most common Source machinima genres are comedy sketch series or Gmod webcomics.
